Things have been pretty busy at the FOX network during the 2019-2020 television season.
Watching what was cancelled, ending or the ongoing soap opera of ‘Will they or won’t they renew it?’ was almost like watching a tennis match.
Once upon a time in Hollywood, shows were either renewed or cancelled. Now there’s a third option: ending.
Apparently, cancelled is what the network does to you and ending is what showrunners do to themselves. It’s almost like the whole you-can-fire-me-I-quit game.
Ending:
Arrow (the last episode will air on January 28, 2020)
Empire
(although the network says it will wrap in 2020, the last episode aired on
December 3, 2019)
The following might have already aired their last episode, we’re posting them anyway because you may have gotten busy with your life.

Executive Producer Lee Daniels has stated that there will be a Star TV movie to wrap up the storylines. There has been no word yet on when the movie will air.

Deputy

Premise: A drama that blends elements of a Western with the stark reality of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
After his boss has a heart attack and dies, the department uses a rule that was created back in the Wild West era, putting Deputy Hollister in the position of authority; one that was previously held by his boss.
Hollister is fifth-generation law enforcement and finds it difficult to deal with the politics of his job; he’s much more comfortable pursuing suspects and making arrests.
The Boob Toober’s review: Deputy, from its description, sounds a little bit like Longmire meets Colors.
What’s good about the show is that instead of having the title role be someone who was hired to run the Mounted Division from outside of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, it’s someone who was already working for them.
Instead of having the usual situation of people being mistrusting of the new person coming in, the main character Hollister already has his share of enemies and friends.
The real Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is in charge of 153 unincorporated communities and 42 cities throughout the county of Los Angeles; providing courthouse security of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, housing and transportation for inmates, law enforcement services to 10 community college campuses, 26 hospitals, county parks, lakes and golf courses, and services for crime laboratories, homicide investigations, academy training for smaller law enforcement agencies within the county.
Although the cast is way too small to fulfill all these requirements, if the show stays true to the reputation of L.A.S.D similar to what Law & Order did for the NYPD, Major Crimes/The Closure did for the LAPD and Southland did for the LAPD, they’ll never run out of unique storylines.
With the real department having 188,000 employees there will always be room for guest stars appearing in episodes.
This show is The Boob Toober’s first rating of a must-see show even if it’s only for the first couple of episodes.
The concept is pretty unique for network television and it has a somewhat diverse cast of actors including five female actresses out of a cast of nine.

9-1-1: Lone Star (a spin-off series of 9-1-1)

Premise: On 9/11 Owen Strand became the only survivor of his firehouse and had to rebuild it. When a firehouse in Austin seemed to suffer a similar event, Strand and his fire fighter son (T.K.) relocate to Austin, Texas to help rebuilding it.
The Boob Toober review: Although there will probably some similarities to its spin-off show, 9-1-1, there will undoubtedly be differences as well due to the location and characters of the show. There’s really no comparison between New York and Texas.
Strand, a native New Yorker, will undoubtedly bring along his New York attitude and philosophies because, well, Hollywood just can’t help themselves when it comes to stereo-typing cities like New York, Philadelphia and California.
Rob Lowe is a terrific actor to have on this series because not only does he bring with him over 36 years of diverse acting, but his characters always bring a certain element to the shows/movies he’s in as was the case with CBS’ medical drama, Code Black.
The show does seem to have a bit of a soap operatic side to it. His son has been described as troubled which means there’s going to be a lot of drama. It’s also important to note that his son is not a child, but a grown man which means manly troubled.
The showrunners have given their possible viewers a teaser in order to make them want to tune in:
“On the surface, Owen is all about big-city style and swagger, but underneath he struggles with a secret he hides from the world – one that could very well end his life.”
Oh, no. Really?
If the show was on any other network, it would probably stand a good chance with some type of longevity, but this is FOX. They seem to keep shows with low ratings and cancel shows that do well just because they feel like it.
So basically it’s the equivalent of a coin toss.

Outmatched

Premise: A couple moves to Atlantic City, New Jersey with their four kids, three of them who are geniuses.
The Boob Toober review: The cast are all veterans of comedy TV which is a good thing. It’s another family sitcom which means there will be a lot of situations between the parents and the kids, some which will be typical issues and some, hopefully, will be original issues. The fact that three of the kids are probably smarter than they are will make a difference on how each situation plays out.

Duncanville

Oh, and he has a sister named Kimberly.
The Boob Toober review: Although the show is animated, it shows the typical relationship between a 15 year old and their mother; where the teenager wants to do things that the parent knows is bad for him.
Although this show kind of looks like something that would be on The Cartoon Network, this is probably intentional on the part of FOX wanting to take some viewership away from their biggest competitor.

Premise: The show centers around a rich Southern family who made their fortune by creating a Christian television network. After the father (Gerald McRaney) dies in a plane crash the family finds out that he had a secret life that included illegitimate children and carousing with scantily clad younger women.
While the offspring he had with his wife (Kim Cattrall) have enjoyed a life of privilege, his other kids have not; they work blue collar jobs.
To add to his legitimate family’s problems that accompanies his death, they learn that their father included these other children in his will.
He obviously wanted to include them probably for ignoring their existence for their entire lives, but also doesn’t want them to read too much into it so he only gives them $1 million each out of a net worth of several billions.
The Boob Toober review: Think Flamingo Road meets Dallas meets Aaron Spelling meets Tyler Perry. The show has all the elements of a typical soap opera: money, greed, attitude, ego, narcissism, a Southern family, hidden agendas, anger, death, sex, deception, religion, and illegitimate offspring.
Die hard soap fans will love it.

The Boob Toober review: There nothing that screams ‘Watch me!’ unless you are a fan of the science fiction genre and then you’ll probably love it.
Unlike many of today’s science fiction television shows, there will be less physical action and more intelligence action which makes sense because the series centers on an AI device.
Since several of the actors cast are minors and will be playing the children of either Paul LeBlanc or Fernanda Andrade there will be a family element to this.
John Slattery has created several iconic characters throughout his career, so it’ll be good to see what he does with this character.
