What’s Coming and Going on FOX in 2020

Things have been pretty busy at the FOX network during the 2019-2020 television season.

Watching what was cancelled, ending or the ongoing soap opera of ‘Will they or won’t they renew it?’ was almost like watching a tennis match.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, shows were either renewed or cancelled. Now there’s a third option: ending.

Apparently, cancelled is what the network does to you and ending is what showrunners do to themselves. It’s almost like the whole you-can-fire-me-I-quit game.

Ending:

Arrow (the last episode will air on January 28, 2020)

Empire (although the network says it will wrap in 2020, the last episode aired on December 3, 2019)

The following might have already aired their last episode, we’re posting them anyway because you may have gotten busy with your life.

Cancelled:

BH90210 (last episode aired on 9/11/2019)

The Cool Kids (last episode aired on 5/10/2019)

Paradise Hotel (last episode aired 6/6/20190)

Star (last episode aired on May 10, 2019).

Executive Producer Lee Daniels has stated that there will be a Star TV movie to wrap up the storylines. There has been no word yet on when the movie will air.

Now for a little bit of good news. Series that will be premiering in 2020.

Deputy

Premiere date: January 2, 2020, 9:00 p.m.

Fast facts:

Genre: Crime/drama/police procedural

Created by: Will Beall, David Ayer

Cast: Stephen Dorff as Deputy Bill Hollister (Blade, Judgement Night, Roseanne, What a Dummy, Star, True Detective); Yara Martinez as Dr. Paula Reyes (Southland, Breakout Kings, Alpha House, Bull, Jane the Virgin, True Detective); Brian Van Holt as Cade Walker (Love & Money, Cougar Town, The Bridge); Siena Goines as Rachel Delgado (The Young and the Restless, Judging Amy, Private Practice, Chase); Danielle Moné Truitt as Charlie Minnick; Bex Taylor-Klaus as Breanna Bishop (Arrow, Voltron: Legendary Defender); Shane Paul McGhie as Joseph Blair (What Men Want); Mark Moses as Jerry London (Platoon, The Doors, Desperate Housewives, Mad Men, Criminal Minds, The Killing, The Last Ship, Berlin Station); Karrueche Tran as Genevieve (The Bay, Claws)

Premise: A drama that blends elements of a Western with the stark reality of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

After his boss has a heart attack and dies, the department uses a rule that was created back in the Wild West era, putting Deputy Hollister in the position of authority; one that was previously held by his boss.

Hollister is fifth-generation law enforcement and finds it difficult to deal with the politics of his job; he’s much more comfortable pursuing suspects and making arrests.

The Boob Toober’s review: Deputy, from its description, sounds a little bit like Longmire meets Colors.

What’s good about the show is that instead of having the title role be someone who was hired to run the Mounted Division from outside of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, it’s someone who was already working for them.

Instead of having the usual situation of people being mistrusting of the new person coming in, the main character Hollister already has his share of enemies and friends.

The real Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is in charge of 153 unincorporated communities and 42 cities throughout the county of Los Angeles; providing courthouse security of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County,  housing and transportation for inmates, law enforcement services to 10 community college campuses, 26 hospitals, county parks, lakes and golf courses, and services for crime laboratories, homicide investigations, academy training for smaller law enforcement agencies within the county.

Although the cast is way too small to fulfill all these requirements, if the show stays true to the reputation of L.A.S.D similar to what Law & Order did for the NYPD, Major Crimes/The Closure did for the LAPD and Southland did for the LAPD, they’ll never run out of unique storylines.

With the real department having 188,000 employees there will always be room for guest stars appearing in episodes.

This show is The Boob Toober’s first rating of a must-see show even if it’s only for the first couple of episodes.

The concept is pretty unique for network television and it has a somewhat diverse cast of actors including five female actresses out of a cast of nine.

9-1-1: Lone Star (a spin-off series of 9-1-1)

Premiere date: January 20, 2020, 8:00 p.m.

Fast facts:

Genre: Procedural drama

Created by: Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Tim Minear

Cast: Rob Lowe as Owen Strand (The Outsiders, About Last Night, St. Elmos Fire, Austin Powers 1 & 2, The West Wing, Code Black, Brothers & Sisters, Parks & Recreation); Liv Tyler as Michelle Blake (Armageddon, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Leftovers, Harlots); Jim Parrack as Judd Ryder (Annapolis, True Blood, The Deuce); Ronen Rubinstein as T. K. Strand (Orange is the New Black); Sierra McClain as Grace Ryder (The Gospel, Daddy’s Little Girls); Natacha Karam as Marjan Marwani (Homeland, Silent Witness, The Heist, The Brave); Brian Michael Smith as Paul Strickland (Blue Bloods, Queen Sugar); Rafael Silva as Carlos Reyes (Narrator Syndrome, Fluidity, Unpaid Inters, Drunk Art Love); Julian Works as Mateo Chavez (American Crime, Southland, The Stand-off, When We Rise)

Premise: On 9/11 Owen Strand became the only survivor of his firehouse and had to rebuild it. When a firehouse in Austin seemed to suffer a similar event, Strand and his fire fighter son (T.K.) relocate to Austin, Texas to help rebuilding it.

The Boob Toober review: Although there will probably some similarities to its spin-off show, 9-1-1, there will undoubtedly be differences as well due to the location and characters of the show. There’s really no comparison between New York and Texas.

Strand, a native New Yorker, will undoubtedly bring along his New York attitude and philosophies because, well, Hollywood just can’t help themselves when it comes to stereo-typing cities like New York, Philadelphia and California.

Rob Lowe is a terrific actor to have on this series because not only does he bring with him over 36 years of diverse acting, but his characters always bring a certain element to the shows/movies he’s in as was the case with CBS’ medical drama, Code Black.

The show does seem to have a bit of a soap operatic side to it. His son has been described as troubled which means there’s going to be a lot of drama. It’s also important to note that his son is not a child, but a grown man which means manly troubled.

The showrunners have given their possible viewers a teaser in order to make them want to tune in:

“On the surface, Owen is all about big-city style and swagger, but underneath he struggles with a secret he hides from the world – one that could very well end his life.”

Oh, no. Really?

If the show was on any other network, it would probably stand a good chance with some type of longevity, but this is FOX. They seem to keep shows with low ratings and cancel shows that do well just because they feel like it.

So basically it’s the equivalent of a coin toss.

Outmatched

Premiere date: January 23, 2020 at 8:30 p.m.

Fast facts:

Genre: Family sitcom

Created by: Lon Zimmet

Cast: Jason Biggs as Mike (American Pie, American Pie 2, American Pie Wedding, American Reunion, Drexell’s Class, As the World Turns, The Good Wife, Mad Love, Orange is the New Black, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles); Maggie Lawson as Cay (Unhappily Ever After, Inside Schwartz, It’s All Regular, Psych, Back in the Game, Two and a Half Men, Angel from Hell, Psych: The Movie, Lethal Weapon); Tisha Campbell-Martin as Rita (House Party 1, 2 & 3, School Daze, Martin, My Wife & Kids, All of Us, Everyone Hates Chris, Real Husbands of Hollywood, Empire); Finesse Mitchell as Irwin (Saturday Night Live). The kids: Connor Kalopsis (The Grinder, Days of Our Lives); Ashley Boettcher (Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street, Lost in Oz); Jack Stanton (The Mick, Coop and Cam Ask the World); Oakley Bull (Wonder Woman 1984)

Premise: A couple moves to Atlantic City, New Jersey with their four kids, three of them who are geniuses.

The Boob Toober review: The cast are all veterans of comedy TV which is a good thing. It’s another family sitcom which means there will be a lot of situations between the parents and the kids, some which will be typical issues and some, hopefully, will be original issues. The fact that three of the kids are probably smarter than they are will make a difference on how each situation plays out.

Duncanville

Premiere date: February 16, 2020 at 8:30 p.m.

Fast facts:

Genre: Animated sitcom

Created by: Amy Poehler, Mike Scully, Julie Scully

Cast: Amy Poehler as Duncan Harris and Annie Harris (Saturday Night Live, Parks & Recreation, Mean Girls, Baby Mama, Sisters, Upright Citizens Brigade, The UCB Show, Making It); Ty Burrell as Jack Harris (Dawn of the Dead, The Incredible Hulk, Muppets Most Wanted, Modern Family, Boondoggle); Riki Lindhome as Kimberly Harris (Million Dollar Baby, Gilmore Girls, The Big Bang Theory, Another Period); Rashida Jones as Mia (I Love You, Man, Our Idiot Brother, Boston Public, The Office, The Awesomes, Angie Tribeca, Claws); Wiz Khalifa as Mr. Mitch (Rapper)

Premise: The show is about 15 year old Duncan Harris who always seems to be really bad when it comes to making good decisions. His mom, Annie, is constantly on him to make better decisions. Although Annie is a parking enforcement officer, she dreams of becoming a detective and his father wants to be a better dad to Duncan than his father was with him. Oh, and he has a sister named Kimberly.

The Boob Toober review: Although the show is animated, it shows the typical relationship between a 15 year old and their mother; where the teenager wants to do things that the parent knows is bad for him.

Although this show kind of looks like something that would be on The Cartoon Network, this is probably intentional on the part of FOX wanting to take some viewership away from their biggest competitor.

There are also three new shows that have been slated to start during the midseason at FOX, but they haven’t been scheduled yet.

Filthy Rich

Fast facts:

Genre: Drama, soap opera

Created by: Based on the book, Filthy Rich, by Gavin Strawhan and Rachel Lang

Developed by: Tate Taylor

Cast: Kim Cattrall as Margaret Monreaux (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Sex in the City 1 & 2, Sex in the City, Producing Parker, Sensitive Skin, Witness for the Prosecution, Tell Me a Story); Gerald McRaney as Eugene Monreaux (Gunsmoke, Barnaby Jones, Simon & Simon, Major Dad, Touch By An Angel, Promised Land, The West Wing, Jericho, Undercovers, Longmire, house of Cards, NCIS: Los Angeles, 24: Legacy, This is Us); Aubrey Dollar as Rose Monreaux (Dawson’s Creek, Guiding Light, Point Pleasnat, Women’s Murder Club); Corey Cott as Eric Monreaux (Z: The Beginning of Everything, The Good Fight); Benjamin Levy Aguilar as Antonio Rivera (Chicago P.D., Glee); Mark L. Young as Jason Conley (Tammy, Six Feet Under, Big Love, The Inbetweeners, Betas, The Comeback); Melia Kreiling as Ginger Sweet (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Borgias, Tyrant, The Last Tycoon, Salvation); Steve Harris as Franklin Lee (Diary of a Mad Black Woman, The Practice, The Batman, Awake, Justified, Legends); Aaron Lazar as Reverend Paul Luke Thomas (The Wolf of Wall Street, Avengers: Endgame); Olivia Macklin as Becky Monreaux (The Young Pope, Dead to Me, Radium).

Premise: The show centers around a rich Southern family who made their fortune by creating a Christian television network. After the father (Gerald McRaney) dies in a plane crash the family finds out that he had a secret life that included illegitimate children and carousing with scantily clad younger women.

While the offspring he had with his wife (Kim Cattrall) have enjoyed a life of privilege, his other kids have not; they work blue collar jobs.

To add to his legitimate family’s problems that accompanies his death, they learn that their father included these other children in his will.

He obviously wanted to include them probably for ignoring their existence for their entire lives, but also doesn’t want them to read too much into it so he only gives them $1 million each out of a net worth of several billions.

The Boob Toober review: Think Flamingo Road meets Dallas meets Aaron Spelling meets Tyler Perry. The show has all the elements of a typical soap opera: money, greed, attitude, ego, narcissism, a Southern family, hidden agendas, anger, death, sex, deception, religion, and illegitimate offspring.

Die hard soap fans will love it.

The Great North

Fast facts:

Genre: Animated comedy

Created by: Wendy Molyneux

Cast: Nick Offerman (NYPD Blue, Gilmore Girls, Children’s Hospital, Bob’s Burgers, Parks & Recreation, Making It); Jenny Slate (Saturday Night Live, Bored to Death, Girls, House of Lies, Parks & Recreation, Drunk History, Star vs. the Forces of Evil); Megan Mullally (The Ellen Burstyn Show, Herman’s Head, Will & Grace, 30 Rock); Will Forte ( Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, Saturday Night Live, Gravity Falls, The Last Man on Earth); Paul Rust (I Love You Beth Cooper, Pee Wee’s Big Holiday, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Bob’s Burgers, Love); Aparna Nancherla (BoJack Horseman, Crashing, Corporate); DulcĂ© Sloan (Stand-up comic)

Premise: The series follows the adventures of Alaskan single father Beef Tobin (Nick Offerman) as he tries to keep his kids close. He is especially worried about his daughter wanting to leave the family fishing boat to pursue her artistic aspirations at the local mall.

The Boob Toober review: There are just too many similarities between this show, Duncanville and Outmatched which is probably why it has been scheduled yet.

There isn’t a trailer available which can’t be a good thing.

neXt

Fast facts:

Genre: Science fiction, crime, drama

Created by: Manny Coto

Cast: John Slattery as Paul Leblanc (Mad Men, Sleepers, Traffic, Avengers: Endgame, Homefront, Maggie, Judging Amy, Ed); Fernanda Andrade as Shea Salazar (For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, The Suitor, Fallen); Michael Mosley as C.M. (Scrubs, Castle, Longmire); Jason Butler Harner as Ted LeBlanc (The Good Shepherd, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Alcatraz); Gerardo Celasco as Ty Salazar (How to Get Away with Murder, Briarpatch); Elizabeth Cappuccino as Abby LeBlanc (Orange is the New Black, Jessica Jones); Evan Whitten as Ethan Salazar (Mr. Robot, Words Written on Bathroom Walls)

Premise: A Silicon Valley groundbreaker (John Slattery as Paul LeBlanc) learns that an AI he created has developed the ability to constantly improve itself thus making mankind rather pointless. LeBlanc teams up with a Homeland Cybersecurity team (lead by Fernanda Andrade as Shea Salazar) to find it and stop before to wreaks havoc on the world.

The Boob Toober review: There nothing that screams ‘Watch me!’ unless you are a fan of the science fiction genre and then you’ll probably love it.

Unlike many of today’s science fiction television shows, there will be less physical action and more intelligence action which makes sense because the series centers on an AI device.

Since several of the actors cast are minors and will be playing the children of either Paul LeBlanc or Fernanda Andrade there will be a family element to this.

John Slattery has created several iconic characters throughout his career, so it’ll be good to see what he does with this character.

What’s New on ABC in January 2020

The alphabet network (ABC) really seemed to clean house with several of their shows calling it quits.

Whether they decided to call it quits before getting cancelled is really just a matter of opinion.

Modern Family, How to Get Away with Murder and Fresh Off the Boat will take their final bow at the end of 2020, if not before.

Their only new show, Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time, in January will make their debut on January 7, 2020.

Let’s be honest here, it’s not really a new show. Just an extension of an old one.

The show will feature all three of its biggest winners of all time: Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, and Jamez Holzhauer.

Jamez Holzhauer, in 2019, won $2,712,216, Ken Jennings, in 2004, won $3,370,700, and Brad Rutter, in 2000, won $4,688,436.

The trio will compete in a series of matches until someone wins $1,000,000 and will be crowned the Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time winner.

Since all three of them have already won way more than a measly $1,000,000, the real prize is probably the claim to be the best; to win bragging rights.

It should be noted that Rutter has never been defeated by either a human or computer so many fans feel that the odds of him winning are in his favor, but it’s most likely anyone’s game.

While most networks found themselves having to cancel new shows, ABC hit gold with shows like mixed-ish, Stumptown and Kids Say the Darndest Things.

Although the ratings for mixed-ish have slipped somewhat, there has been no talk of a cancellation.

The fourth new show, Emergence, has been the focus of rumors about the possibility of a cancellation and ABC has been mum about this. They currently have the show as TBD (to be determined) among the shows getting renewed.

So instead of having a couple of new shows coming on, they’re bringing back a couple of staples for their winter season premieres as well as those who took a Fall break:

January 4:

                        America’s Funniest Home Videos

January 6:

The Bachelor (2 hour season premiere)

                        mixed-ish

                        black-ish

January 8:

                        Modern Family

                        Single Parents

                        Stumptown

January 13

                        The Good Doctor

January 15:

                        The Goldbergs

                        Schooled

January 17:

                        American Housewife

                        Fresh Off the Boat

January 21:

                        The Conners

                        Bless This Mess

January 23:

                        Station 19

                        Grey’s Anatomy

You’re going to wait until February for American Idol (February 16), The Rookie (February 23), and April 2 for How to Get Away with Murder.

On February 11, 2020, ABC will wheel out the much anticipated show, For Life.

Fast facts:

Genre: Crime/Thriller

Created by: Hank Steinberg (61*, RFK, Without a Trace, The Last Ship)

Cast: Nicholas Pinnock as Aaron (Captain America: The First Avenger, Fortitude, Marcella, Barbarians Rising); Indira Varma as Kate (Attachments, Arena, Rome, Game of Thrones); Dorian Missick as Jamal (The Manchurian Candidate, Deliver Us from Evil, Law & Order, Southland, Animal Kingdom); Mary Stuart Masterson as Anya (The Stepford Wives, Some Kind of Wonderful, Fried Green Tomatoes, Benny & Joon, Law & Order: SVU, Blindspot); Felonious Munk as Hassan Nawaz (stand-up comedian)

Premise:

An inmate, while serving a life sentence, becomes a lawyer and fights to overturn his sentence for a crime he didn’t commit.

Special note: Rapper 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson) is one of the producers. The production company involved, G-Unit Film & Television, is Jackson’s company.

The Boob Toober review:

Doing a weekly series about prison and prison life (regardless of the storyline) is a touchy subject. Doing a weekly serious about prison and prison life on network television is difficult. Doing a weekly series about prison and prison life on a network that is known for its family-oriented reputation as well as watering-down anything that might offend their conservative viewership is like doing a high-wire act.

There are a lot of stories to be told about prison life that can either be horrifying or uplifting, but the biggest obstacle here will be the show’s ability to tell a story that is believable.

It also remains to be seen whether the showrunners can find an audience on ABC because if they try to appease the conservative viewers, they could risk losing both their urban viewers and those viewers who are either in prison or have family members that are/were in prison.

Risking damaging a working relationship with Curtis Jackson who, with his production company, has created quite an impressive resume as a producer could hurt them down the line as well.

The premise isn’t a new one, but let’s hope the way the story is told and how the characters react to their environment is certainly an original one.
